TTO Running Cost Calculator
A contact printing technology that transfers ink from a ribbon onto flexible packaging film using a heated printhead, producing sharp, high-contrast codes. Enter your own volumes and prices below to get the true monthly running cost and cost per print.
Technology & Context
Changes which fields appear below.
Real manufacturers researched for this technology — picking one filters the Model list below. Brand names are trademarks of their respective owners, shown for reference only.
Machine & Line Setup
Multiplied by Number of Printers below to get total investment.
This is the multiplier — it scales machine price and total volume.
Not used in any calculation below — shown for your own planning reference only.
Output of ONE printer per day. Total volume = this × Number of Printers.
Used for optional electricity cost, if enabled below.
Drives every consumable cost below — a longer message uses proportionally more ink/ribbon.
Ribbon & Printhead
Multi-lane printing — how many messages fit side by side across the ribbon width. Enter your real number, not 1 by default, if your product allows multi-lane.
Rated life in KM of ribbon travel — check your printhead warranty/spec.
Labor & Maintenance
Feeds the Risk Summary and Cost-Saving Opportunities panels — does not change the cost totals directly.
Downtime & Rejection
Whole-operation total (e.g. "the line was down 4 hours this month"), not per printer.
Applied automatically to total volume across all printers.
Consumable Breakdown / Month
- ribbon₹26,000
- printhead₹7,583
Risk Summary
- LowNot using multi-lane (messages-per-ribbon-width) printing — if your product width allows it, this is usually the single biggest ribbon-cost lever for TTO.
TTO running cost: common questions
How is TTO running cost calculated?
Ribbon used per print = (message height + gap between prints) ÷ number of lanes across the ribbon width; monthly rolls = ribbon used ÷ roll length. Printhead wear = kilometres of ribbon used ÷ rated printhead life × printhead price. Maintenance, operator, downtime and rejection costs are added, and the monthly total ÷ prints per month gives cost per print.
What consumables does a TTO printer use?
Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) typically uses: Ribbon (wax, wax-resin, or resin).
What hidden costs should I include for TTO?
Commonly missed for TTO: Ribbon consumption cost scales directly with print message length; Printhead replacement every certain million pulses; and Ribbon-to-film compatibility testing cost. Downtime and rejection from bad codes apply to every technology and are often larger than the consumable bill.
When is TTO not the right choice?
For rigid or curved containers, or where ribbon logistics are impractical — CIJ or laser may suit better.
