Ink Adhesion Basics
Why ink-substrate compatibility determines real-world print quality.
Ink adhesion depends on the chemical compatibility between the ink formulation and the substrate surface energy. Untreated plastics and certain films have low surface energy, causing ink to bead or smudge rather than bond.
Corona treatment, primers, or substrate-matched ink chemistries (solvent-based vs UV-curable vs water-based) are often required to achieve reliable adhesion. Always request adhesion testing on your actual substrate batch before finalizing a technology and ink combination.
