Barcode and QR Printing Basics

What affects barcode and QR code scanability in industrial printing.

Barcode and QR code scanability depends on print resolution, contrast, and consistency — not just the printing technology's rated capability. Key factors include minimum module/bar width relative to printhead resolution, edge sharpness (affected by ink bleed or ribbon wear), and consistent contrast against the substrate background.

Technologies like TIJ, TTO, and Piezo generally produce more reliable scannable codes than CIJ at small sizes, due to higher native resolution. Always verify barcode grade (per ISO/IEC 15416 or GS1 guidelines) under real production conditions, not just visual inspection.
