UV Inkjet
Instant-cure printing for direct-to-product marking
What It Is
An inkjet technology using UV-curable ink that is instantly hardened by UV light exposure immediately after printing, enabling durable marks on a wide range of substrates.
How It Works
Ink droplets (from piezo or valve-jet heads) are deposited on the substrate and immediately passed under a UV lamp or LED array, which cures/hardens the ink through a photochemical reaction.
Typical Machine Appearance
A printhead assembly paired with a compact UV curing lamp or LED unit positioned immediately downstream of the print zone.
Typical Applications
- • Direct marking on plastics, metals, glass
- • Promotional/functional codes needing durability
- • Products exposed to handling, moisture, or abrasion
Suitable Substrates
Speed & Print Quality
Speed: Medium, dependent on cure time and printhead configuration
Quality: Very good — durable, scratch- and smudge-resistant marks
Consumables & Maintenance
Consumables: UV ink, UV lamp/LED (periodic replacement)
Maintenance level: Medium — lamp/LED life monitoring and nozzle care
Best-Fit Industries
Advantages
- Instant cure — no drying time
- Durable marks resistant to smudging/moisture
- Wide substrate compatibility
Limitations
- UV ink cost premium
- Lamp/LED replacement cost over time
- Curing unit adds energy consumption and footprint
Common Mistakes
- Not budgeting for UV lamp/LED replacement in TCO
- Under-curing due to line speed mismatches, causing smudging
Hidden Cost Factors
- UV lamp/LED replacement interval and cost
- Energy cost of curing unit
- UV ink premium pricing
When Not To Use UV Inkjet
For simple porous-substrate coding where standard inkjet cures adequately without UV — added cost may not be justified.
