Bulk / Continuous-supply TIJ (CTIJ)
Thermal inkjet quality with bulk-ink economics
What It Is
A variant of thermal inkjet where the printhead is fed from an external bulk ink reservoir instead of a disposable cartridge, reducing cost per print at high volumes.
How It Works
Same droplet-ejection mechanism as standard TIJ, but ink is continuously supplied from a bulk bottle or tank through a feed tube, keeping the printhead topped up without cartridge swaps.
Typical Machine Appearance
A TIJ-style printhead connected via tubing to an external bulk ink bottle mounted nearby.
Typical Applications
- • High-volume carton coding
- • Bag and pouch coding
- • FMCG production lines running multiple shifts
Suitable Substrates
Speed & Print Quality
Speed: Medium-high, comparable to standard TIJ
Quality: Excellent — same droplet technology as TIJ
Consumables & Maintenance
Consumables: Bulk ink, Occasional printhead replacement
Maintenance level: Low-medium
Best-Fit Industries
Advantages
- Lower cost per print than cartridge TIJ at scale
- High print quality retained
- Reduced changeover frequency
Limitations
- Higher upfront investment than basic TIJ
- Printhead replacement cost when it reaches end of life
- Bulk ink handling needs care to avoid contamination
Common Mistakes
- Not accounting for printhead replacement cost in TCO
- Poor ink filtration leading to clogging
Hidden Cost Factors
- Printhead replacement interval and cost
- Bulk ink wastage during priming
When Not To Use CTIJ
For low-volume or intermittent production where cartridge TIJ's lower capex is more economical.
